To locals, Siargao is a slow paced hometown with coconut farms and mangroves but recently word has spread of the islands majestic waves and Siargao has exploded as a surfing mecca, luring wave-riders to spend hours in the water. Unlike other destinations in Asia, Siargao has remained relatively unknown and has yet to be overrun with tourism. This means you get the glorious white sand, the explosion of coconut tree fringed beaches, the crystal-clear water, and friendly, curious locals but minus the crowds, pollution, noise, bright lights, and unappealing scenes associated with places like Bali or Thailand. Although Siargao is a little, remote island in the South Pacific it still comes with the Western comforts you'll want for enjoying your holiday.
When is the best time to visit Siargao?
Well, that depends..
For the best Surfing: If you have love-heart-eyes for the surfing in Siargao and you want the surf to be pumpin' hard and barreling then go from the end of September to late November because the easterly Mindanao current gives the islands waves from the deepest regions of the Pacific Ocean. This is the peak season in Siargao. You might prefer to go in September because they host surfing events during these months, the most popular being Siargao Cloud 9 Surfing Cup, an official WSL Pro event.
For less crowds whilst surfing: If you prefer to avoid surfing in crowded line-ups then come from December to April. You'll still get solid waves everyday but because it's the rainy season there are much fewer tourists.
Learn to Surf: If you want to learn how to surf then I recommend avoiding the peak season (September to end of November). It's probably best to come during the summer months when the waves are smaller and the weather is great.
Nothing but sun: If you aren’t as interested in the surf but you love blue skies and sunshine, then it's better to avoid the winter months (December – March) because that's the rainy season. Late March/April until May has the highest amount of sunny days.
How to get to Siargao Island
Unlike previous years, Siargao is now more accessible. Welcoming about 12 flights daily from Manila and Cebu and development to public roads on the island.
On the island of Siargao there is a small airport called Sayak Airport. Travelling by air is the most efficient way to reach the island. You can now fly direct from Manila, whereas before you used to need to stop over at Cebu City or Surigao City. The flight time from Manila airport is 2 hours.
Airlines that fly to Siargao Island
Manila to Siargao: Cebu Pacific and Skyjet
Cebu to Siargao: Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines
Clark to Siargao: Philippine Airlines
Davao to Siargao: Philippine Airlines
Surigao City to Siargao: Cebu Pacific

Getting from the Airport to General Luna
Its likely that you'll want to visit or stay in the thick of the social scene found in the municipality of General Luna.
Here you'll find a variety of accomodation options, resorts and restaurants. However, Sayak airport is located in Del Carmen, 45 minutes away. To get to General Luna you can walk outside the airport and jump in a shared van, costing roughly 300 Pesos each for the trip. This is your fastest and cheapest option. Unless there you are in a small group of 2/3 you could jump in a habal-habal to general luna for 500 Pesos but it might be uncomfortable.
Riding a motorbike from the airport to General Luna is possible, however might not be a sensible option if you have a big luggage.
Don't want to fly?
If flights are expensive or you are practising more sustainable travel then there is another way. Take the overnight ferry from Cebu City to Surigao City and then take a fastcraft to Siargao. The ferry is also a great option if you have surfboards because there are no additional baggage fees.
Schedule: Gates open at 4pm, there are at least two ships leaving Cebu City to Surigao City every night at 7pm and arriving in Surigao City around 4am. The boat ride from Surigao to Siargao Island takes around 3 hours. | See the boat timetable | Once you arrive at the port in Surigao City simply buy a ticket for the next available ferry to Siargao Island. The next ferry to Siargao Island is 5:30am or there are also ferries at 11:30am and noon.
Note: There is no ferry from Cebu to Surigao on Sunday and no ferry from Surigao to Cebu on Saturday.
Ferry tickets: You can purchase your ticket on arrival at the ferry port (terminal 1) but I suggest buying them in advance at the Traveller's Lounge in SM Mall Cebu to make sure you get a ticket because occasionally it does sell out.
Ferry Rates:
Economy class (no a/c): about 850 Pesos
Tourist / business class (with a/c): about 1050 Pesos
Cabin for 6: about 1350 Pesos (per person)
Money - Take Cash
There is an ATM in General Luna but according to many people, it is often out of money or offline so you can't rely on that one. There are three ATM's in the city of Dapa, which is about a half hour drive away but are also often out of money so don't count on them at the last minute either. They accept most international credit and debit cards.
It's my advice that you bring plenty of cash from Cebu or Manila with you and make it last.
A few of the bigger resorts and stores will do cash back on credit cards. I know that Ocean 101 resort is one, with a 5% charge, making it the cheapest one around.
How to get around the island
Habal-habal: A motorcycle with a quirky car like frame, built for sharing. A fast and very cheap option if you're up for it. Riding around General Luna will only cost 20 Pesos per ride and 30 Pesos at night time.
Tricycle: same same but different, the frame is smaller so fits less people. Slightly more expensive than habal-habals.
Bicycles: Cost 250 Pesos for 24 hours.
Car: its possible to rent a car on the island, this isn't a bad option if you're travelling in a group. Negotiable 2500 Pesos for 24 hours.
Renting a motorbike
Motorbikes are available for rent, for anywhere between 400- 500 Pesos for 24 hours. Be forewarned, most scooter and motorbike rentals don’t come with a helmet, please be careful. You can refill the petrol on the side of the road, look out for the red bottles. You'll need to bottle to fill up your tank, it usually costs 50 pesos per bottle. I recommend checking out Fat Lips Surf Store in General Luna, they have all-new Honda XRM semi-automatic motobikes and Honda Beat automatic scooters for rent. All bikes are well-maintained, have up-to-date registration papers, and include free use of helmets for up to two people. Rental prices at Fat Lips are 400 Pesos/day or 350 Pesos/day for one week or more.
Bring your license: You'll need to bring a valid driver's license. Philippine law states that a valid driver's license from any country is valid to use in the Philippines for 30 days after entering the country so long as it's in English. No need to have an international driving license, just remember to bring your regular driver's license with you
What to do in Siargao
The 'Go To' Island Tour company - @mysiargaoguide
My recommendation for all guided tours is My Siargao Guide. A tour company run by a couple based at Bravo Surf Resort in General Luna, they run a variety of very well executed scheduled tours on the island. Most popular are Sugba Lagoon (P2000) and island-hopping (P1200); others are Magpupungko (P1000) and Sohoton (P2000). All include lunch, drinks, snorkel gear and, for Sugba, stand-up paddleboards. The hosts of the company are extremely friendly and happy to answer any and all questions re Siargao. They are also conscious of the islands environment and sustainability. To book a tour or ask a question then head to Bravo reception or send them a message on Instagram @mysiargaoguide.
Surfing
Siargao is known as the 'surf capital of the Philippines' due to it's many world-class, uncrowded, and picture perfect surf spots.
To find out which surf spot is good for you then the best thing to do is ask around once you've arrived on the island. Ask which spots are working best at the moment and ask where someone of your level could try. If there is no one to ask then head to Fat Lips Surf Shop and I'll be happy to chat with you about the surf, you can even rent a board with them.
Fat Lips surfboard rental prices:
350php/day
300php/day for a week or more
250php/day for two weeks or more
200php/day for one month or more
Note: The annual ‘Cloud 9 Surfing Cup’, a competition officially recognised by the World Surf League Pro, usually happens in late September or early October, so expect huge crowds during this time.
I suck at surfing but I asked around for some of the popular surf breaks in Siargao:
Beginner
Giwan, Quicksilver (Inner), Jacking Horse (Inner)
Intermediate
Quicksilver (Outer), Jacking Horse (Outer), Stimpy’s, Rock Island, Salvacion, Cemetery, Daku.
Expert
Cloud 9, Tuason, Pacifico, Burgos
Learn to surf
Even if you think you'll be terrible, like me, Siargao is the surf capital of the Philippines and there’s waves on the island for every level. For lessons, check out the guys at Kermit, or wander around General Luna for more options. You can also just rent a board at Fat Lips in General Luna. Unlike other popular surfing destinations around the world, plenty of the surf areas in Siargao are uncrowded. If you want real privacy you might want to hire a boat to take you out past the reefs to another island, I heard Daku Reef is great and virtually no people. G1 is where most beginners will learn, its a little more crowded but its a nice long wave meaning its perfect for learning.
Note: If you are a beginner, then an instructor is crucial to your learning and enjoying surfing, this is not the right time to be trying to save money.
Cloud 9 boardwalk
Pier? Hut? Wharf? Whatever you wanna call it, Cloud 9 is a three story viewing platform over the ocean connected to the land by a long boardwalk. It's a world class place to watch the sunrise as well as good deck to watch the surfers ride some big waves. At sunset theres quiet a crowd but sunrise is magic and quiet...if you can wake up. To walk on the boardwalk its 50 Pesos but its FREE before 7am.
Magpupungko rock pools
Its worth the 45 minute trip up north but note you can only see the pools when the tide is low. You can check the tide forecast here or just ask the local surfers. Entrance is only 50 pesos and it’s easy to reach on your own so no need to a tour if you don't want to. Its a pretty popular spot but explore beyond the main pool and you'll find less crowds.
Sugba Lagoon
Another gorgeous site is Sugba Lagoon, located smack bang in the middle the second biggest Mangrove system in the Philippines. This is a popular destination on most peoples list. To get to the lagoon you'll need to start your day early and take a 90 minute boat to this gorgeous lagoon surrounded by mountains. Find an organised tour in town to make your life easier and enjoy a day of swimming and cliff diving, you can also rent paddle boards. Your tour will usually include lunch but if not there’s a big pontoon house where you can have fresh seafood meals for lunch at affordable prices.
A tour with My Siargao Guide is 2000 Pesos per head, includes a BBQ lunch, rum, snacks all transfers via van and boat, entrance fee, and stand up paddle boards.
A cheaper option is to travel around 1 hour to Del Carmens marine protection office and share a boat with other people. The boat fee from here is 1600 Pesos and fits 6 people, then the entrance fee is 100 Pesos per person. The boat ride from Del Carmen to Sugba Lagoon takes about 40-50 minutes.
Sohoton Cove
While not actually on Siargao island itself, Sohoton Cove is one of the most loved things to do while visiting Siargao, though it does take several hours to get there, including a couple just in a boat. However it looks just as stunning, if not more-so, than Sugba Lagoon and includes a cave excursion as well.
You can sign up for this trip with places in General Luna such as Kermit or Bravo, however trips are depended on (usually 12 ) sign ups, so you may be disappointed when your trip is cancelled. Another option if you have enough people (8 or so), or if you can recruit people, you can get your own boat over. There are plenty of signs in town for boat rentals.
3 Islands Tour; Guyam island, Daku Island, Naked Island.
Most island hopping excursions will take you to Naked, Daku, and Guyam Islands. You’ll see signs posted all over General Luna advertising the island hopping trips and all of them will take you to the same place. The difference will be the comfort, the lunch included, and the boat you take.
Naked Island is actually a sand bar with dazzlingly white sand and gorgeous turquoise water all around. This means you won’t have shade, so make sure that you bring ample sunscreen!
The other two islands do have some trees, and Daku Island has a little fishing village and cottages where you can grab some light meals. All three islands have powdery white sand, no litter and outstanding clear water. If you’re a surfer, you can also hire a boat to take you just out to Daku Reef for some nice and uncrowded surfing.
Alegria Beach
Cloud 9 is a hot spot and definitely has the island buzz, if you prefer a different vibe then you can head north, to the tip top of the island to Alegria Beach, which remains unspoiled and has preserved its local flavour. Its not a popular tourist spot with just a few locals hanging out behind the beach. It about a 1 hour drive to Alegria Beach from General Luna. This area of municipality called Santa Monica is a wide stretch of immaculate sand. If this is your preference you may also want to check out Pacifico Beach.
Beach Clean Up
You'll notice as you walk around that Siargao is very anti-plastic, they have a few rules in place to reduce the use of plastic on the island and most places support this by offering free water bottle re-fills. Hallelujah!
Join the SEA Movement who gather groups to actively go and clean the beaches, they would absolutely love your help. Thanks to them, Siargao has the cleanest beaches!
The Sun Crew also organise a beach clean up every week weekend at 9am on Saturday to help keep Pacifico Clean.
Ask for the Party Schedule
Each night there is a party on the island and its always hosted at a different bar. When you arrive speak to your front desk or ask around to see where to hit up. Theres a pre-pre location, pre-location and then the actual party, which usually kicks off at 11pm.
Yoga
Many places around Siargao offer daily yoga. You will notice the signs as you drive around.
Try Lotus Shores for daily yoga classes in a gorgeous setting. All the classes are suitable for all levels. Modifications and options are offered for more experienced yoga practitioners as well as beginners. They offer a mixture of yoga styles including Post-Surf yoga, Yin and candlelit meditation. | See class Schedule |
Rates for Yoga at Lotus Shores:
Single class - 650 Pesos
3 classes - 1800 Pesos
5 classes - 2750 Pesos
On the Second floor at White Banana they offer ocean facing yoga classes with a free coconut to refresh you after class (nice touch).
Morning 7-8am
Evening 8-9pm
Single class is 500 Pesos
3 classes for 1200 Pesos
Other yoga spots include: Soul Tribe Resort, Kermit Resort, Siargao Blue Resort and Buddahs Surf Resort.
Best Places to watch the sunset
Jacking Horse
A popular spot for beginner surfers, Jack Horse faces slightly more west than Cloud 9. Only a few minutes away from General Luna its easy to get to, just find a quiet spot on the sand and enjoy the colours.
Naked Island
If you day trip on the island hopping tour Naked Island is commonly the last stop, if your tour guide is up for it then you might be able watch the sunset from here before heading back.
Santa Monica
Many tourist never make it is far north of the island, admittedly it is a long trek but if you're chasing the best sunset then this spot is wonderful. Walk to the end of the long pier and watch the sun sink into the water.
Where to stay on Siargao Island
Without much research, you'll soon pick up that most of the action goes on in General Luna, almost 90% of people end up staying here due to its abundance of restaurant options, tours, hotels and more. If you'd like something a little quieter you might like Pacifico, it’s much smaller and (even) more laid back. Forewarning that accomodation gets booked up well in advance, especially the nice, cheap options. I would recommended being organised with where you would like to stay.
The Cheapest Hostels:
Accomodation in Siargao is more expensive than most islands in the Philippines, even dorm beds can be pricey. I've been on the hunt to find you some cheap options so you can enjoy the island longer.

Where to Eat?
The Best Vegan and Veggie places:
White Banana Beach club - My Top Pick
White Banana is a gorgeous ocean facing pescatarian restaurant with an all white beach-chic vibe. Found not fat from Cloud 9 but hidden enough to seem like paradise. Look for the sign to White Banana on the beach side of the road between Siargao Bleu and Harana Surf Resorts.
They don't serve pork, chicken, beef or any meat except a few kinds of freshly caught fish. It’s a very chilled eco-friendly hangout with plastic reduced to minimum terms and mostly everything recycled. The menu is all organic and produced in the Philippines.
